There’s been a lot of hubbub about Steven Gerrard leaving Liverpool this summer, but I’m more concerned about who Brendan Rodgers is going to sign this January.
After all, The Reds have had a real mixed-bag of a season. They’ve had their fair share of top performances, but they’ve also thrown in the occasional stinker. You never really know which version of Liverpool is going to turn up.
Without Luis Suarez, The Reds really are an entirely different kettle of fish. Mario Balotelli has been brought in to replace him, but he’s never really been up to snuff. I’m sure Brendan Rodgers will be looking for a cheap striker this January.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool have been offered ‘a deal to sign’ Toronto FC’s Jermaine Defoe. That’s right, the same Jermaine Defoe who made such an impact at Tottenham over a six season period.
I’m sure that most Liverpool fans will turn their nose up at this possibility of signing Defoe. After all, the man’s 32-years-old and no longer has a route into the England international team. In fact, he’s no longer a real presence in English football. He seems to have dropped off the map.
Fortunately, he hasn’t stopped scoring. In 19 appearances for Toronto FC he’s managed to find the back of the net 12 times. He’s still an effective presence in front of goal.
Remember back in 2009/10, when Jermaine Defoe made 43 appearances for Tottenham and scored 24 goals? Perhaps he could pull off a similar feat at Anfield?
The aforementioned source claims that Toronto are hoping to make around £6m from the transfer. Defoe’s no spring-chicken, but I’d argue that this figure represents his fair value.
He won’t prove to be a long-term solution, but as a short-term solution goes, he looks like a pretty good one. He won’t break the bank, he’s got Premier League experience and he’ll score goals. He’s worth considering.

I think that @ 6 Million pounds Liverpool will be signing a player that knows the EPL well and his age shouldn’t be a issue at all ! Defoe has proven time and time again that he can be deadly in front of goals and he does score goals does he not ! Can’t say the same for Balotelli? Brendan would be making a good decision signing Defoe as a short and not a long term solution ! I say buy him now !
