Why Arsenal NEED to snap up this Premier League bargain:

|

Winston ReidWe’re smack-bang in the middle of the January transfer window now and fans are still waiting to see Arsene Wenger make the changes he needs to make to his lacklustre defense. His current options just aren’t up to snuff.

Laurent Koscielny is good on his day, but he’s currently nursing some major injury problems. Then there’s Per Mertesacker, who’s pretty good in the air, but lacks a lot of other qualities. He’s not got any pace, he can switch off from time to time and he doesn’t make good decisions in dangerous positions.

I’ve lost count of the number of mistakes the big German has made this season. I think it’s fair to say that he’s no longer a long-term solution for The Gunners. The sooner Arsene Wenger can bring in some competition, the better.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘upping their interest’ in West Ham’s main man, Winston Reid.

The Gunners have been linked to the New Zealand international for quite a while now and I have to say that he doesn’t represent a particularly exciting proposition. I’m sure that fans would sooner see their club move in for the Mats Hummels or Raphael Varanes of this world, but maybe it’s time to be realistic.

After all, Reid is a good player. He’s made a major impact for The Hammers this season (just look at their League position). He’s good in the air, quick along the ground and he’s a smart cookie. He strikes me as a slightly less rash Laurent Koscielny.

Perhaps he’d have as big an impact at The Emirates as Gary Cahill has at Stamford Bridge (the Chelsea man used to play for Bolton and it strikes me that he has a similar level of talent to Reid). If that’s the case, then he’s worth considering.

His West Ham contract is up in the summer, so he should be available at a bargain price this January. Let’s hope Arsene Wenger is ready and willing to seal the deal.

What’s your take? Would Winston Reid be a good fit for The Gunners?
