Martin Montoya (Barcelona)Brendan Rodgers has quite a task ahead of him during the January transfer window. After having spent big in the summer, he’s likely to be handed a meagre budget this time around. Despite this, the issues with his squad are bigger and more all-encompassing than ever before.

Steven Gerrard is growing older and less effective. Assuming that players like Adam Lallana aren’t capable of being his long-term replacement, who is? Then there’s the fact that The Reds need to assess both their defense and their attack. At both ends of the pitch, Liverpool seem to be offering diminishing returns.

With this many problems, January isn’t going to be an easy time for Brendan Rodgers.

For now, let’s focus on Liverpool’s defense. More particularly, let’s focus on a player that The Reds keep getting linked to.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool have ‘been handed a major boost’ in their attempts to sign Barcelona’s well-regarded but under-utilised full-back, Martin Montoya.

The 23-year-old doesn’t get much of a look-in at the Nou Camp, but he strikes me as the perfect solution for Liverpool. He’s quick to go up and down the flanks, he works very hard and he’s got technical ability to back up all his endeavour.

He’s a better attacker than he is a defender, but he’s young enough that there’s a good chance that he could still blossom into an all-rounder.

What’s more, it looks like he’s ready to move on, sooner rather than later. Check out these quotes from his agent, who suggests that the Premier League could be his next destination:

‘He is going to go in January and all that has to be done is to reach an agreement with Barcelona. There are a number of clubs in England that are ready to negotiate for him and his buy-out clause is €20m [£15.9m].’

Could one of those clubs be Liverpool? Let’s hope so. £16m (give or take) is a lot of money, but this strikes me as a price worth paying.

What’s your take? Do Liverpool need to add some more options to their defense? Is Martin Montoya be a good solution?

Why Liverpool shouldn’t trigger this 15.8m release clause = Jon Flannagan

We have seen from Gerrard and Carragher what a player shedding blood and tears for their club brings. He is exactly what we need at this moment in time. save the money and invest it in a keeper and a forward.

Ship out Allen, Borini & Johnson.

In Berahino, Delph & any keeper who can actually control his box and play with the ball at his feet.
