Could Manchester United really be preparing to make this £90m deal?

BaleWith the January transfer window fast approaching, the press are sure to cook up a few bizarre rumours. This isn’t a time of year where big deals tend to come to fruition, but that rarely stops the papers from rolling out the usual tosh.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are preparing a £90m bid to sign Real Madrid superstar, Gareth Bale. That’s right, The Red Devils are apparently prepared to smash their transfer record (the £59.7m they spent on Angel Di Maria) to bits.

Many would have assumed that Manchester United would have attempted to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo, but it looks like Louis Van Gaal favours youth over experience. That being said, Bale is one of the few players in world football who might well be capable of justifying his £90m price-tag.

Since moving to The Bernabeu two seasons ago, Bale has made 65 appearances for his new club and has scored 32 goals. That’s the kind of return that most strikers would kill for, let alone a winger. The Welshman would come with Premier League experience and enough youth to ensure the Manchester United hierarchy that he’s a long-term solution.

If Manchester United could afford him, it’s clear that he’d be a fantastic option. He’s one of the best players in the world.

The Red Devils spent a huge amount of cash in the summer, so I find it a little hard to believe that they could be looking to spend big again so soon. It all seems a bit unlikely.

Still, I can’t help but cross my fingers. Can you picture an attack that has Angel Di Maria down one side, Gareth Bale down the other and Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie down the middle? That’s sure to buy you a few goals, isn’t it?

What’s your take? Could Manchester United really secure a deal for Gareth Bale? Should Louis Van Gaal spend his time chasing more realistic targets?
