ValdesDavid De Gea is having the season of his life and yet The Red Devils can’t seem to stop getting linked to new goalkeepers. Is there something to all these rumours, or is it all just tabloid nonsense?

It’s hard to know, but there has to be a reason why Louis Van Gaal (and the Manchester United hierarchy as a whole) has let Barcelona’s ex-goalkeeper, Victor Valdes train at CarringtonĀ this season. The Spaniard has been recovering from a knee injury he suffered last March and has been fighting for fitness on Manchester United’s training ground.

His Barcelona contract expired in the summer, which means he’s available to sign as a free transfer should Manchester United (or anybody else for that matter) decide to take the plunge. To an outsider it would look like Van Gaal and co. are simply waiting for Valdes to prove his fitness before offering him a long-term contract.

He’s only 32-years-old, which is middle-age in the lifespan of a goalkeeper. It’s not like he’s clinging onto his career. If he can shake off his injury problems and get some regular action, he’s going to prove to be a fantastic signing for his next club. Besides, he’s free. It’s not like he’d be an expensive gamble. Simply cover his wages and reap the rewards.

After 12 years at the Nou Camp, the Spaniard must have been keen for a new challenge. Manchester United will be able to offer this and then some. Valdes won’t necessarily waltz right into The Red Devils’ first team but he’s easily good enough to push David De Gea all the way.

Every summer De Gea ends up getting linked to Real Madrid. Having a capable replacement ready will help to lessen the blow when this move eventually comes to pass. There’s no harm in being proactive.

Then again, there has to be a reason why Manchester United have been cautious when it comes to offering Valdes a contract. After all, they see him in action every day in training. What is it that they don’t like?

The Metro claims that Valdes has ‘urged’ United to offer him a contract. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that they’re prepared to do exactly that.

What’s your take? Why haven’t Manchester United sealed a deal for Victor Valdes?
