Could this £30m duo get Arsenal back on track?

Schneiderlin1Arsenal’s troubles this season have been well documented. They’ve recorded some poor results this season and the fans have been quick to get on Arsene Wenger’s back.

But it strikes me that The Gunners are (as usual) only two or three players away from having a squad that’s ready to compete for the top prizes.

In fact, The Metro recently published an article that claims that Arsenal are just ‘£30million’ away from having a squad that’s capable of winning the Premier League. They suggest that The Professor should spend £10m to sign FC Basel’s well-regarded young centre-back and £20m to bring Southampton’s discontent midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin to the Emirates.

As it happens, this strikes me as the right move(s). The Gunners’ main problem lies within their defense. Their back-four doesn’t have enough good options in it and their midfielder is lacking a certain degree of competitive edge.

Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta both work hard, but it strikes me that they’re not really up to the role they’ve been given by Arsene Wenger. They’re not dominant, imposing midfielders. They’re not going to compete for each and every ball.

Schneiderlin, on the other hand, could help to add balance to The Gunners’ squad. He’s a tough tackler, who takes up smart positions, makes plenty of interceptions and makes life difficult for opposition midfielders . As it happens, he’s also pretty handy on the ball and he rarely gives possession away.

Unlike Schneiderlin, Schar has no Premier League experience, but he too looks like a good bet. He’s performed well against clubs like Chelsea and he’s got experience at international level (he’s Swiss). He’s known for his quick, aggressive play, which has seen some compare him to Laurent Koscielny.

If that’s the case, he’d probably be a good defensive partner for Per Mertesacker.

Signing both Schar and Schneiderlin would stop Arsenal from being so top-heavy, protect them from injury and give them a better foothold in big games. Here’s hoping that Arsene Wenger feels the same way.

What’s your take? Who should The Gunners sign during the January transfer window?
