Should Arsenal give up on signing Edinson Cavani?

Edinson CavaniAlexis Sanchez is fitting in very nicely in the Premier League, but you still get the feeling that The Gunners aren’t quite clicking as an attacking unit. They still lack that deadly centre-forward who’s capable of scoring 30 goals per season.

Danny Welbeck could be that man in time, but he’s still developing and doesn’t quite seem to be ready this season.

As such, it really wouldn’t surprise me to see Arsene Wenger reach out into the January transfer window to attempt to sign a world class striker.

As The Metro note, The Gunners have been linked with a move for Paris Saint Germain’s top notch centre-forward, Edinson Cavani for quite some time. It’s easy enough to see why Arsene Wenger might be interested. The man’s goal-scoring record is out of this world.

He’s scored 31 goals in 57 appearances for PSG and before that he found the back of the net 104 times in 138 games for Napoli. He’s a true force of nature.

Unfortunately, Laurent Blanc prefers Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the Uruguayan ace. This has resulted in Edinson Cavani being played out of position on numerous occasions, a situation with which he can’t be too pleased. Naturally enough, this has fueled rumours that he could be open to a move to the Premier League.

And yet the player himself has moved to distance himself from these claims. When asked about dissatisfaction regarding his playing position, he responded:

‘We were not capable of finding another solution. But there is no point to lament it or fight against the club. I feel very good here at Paris and the club supports and protects me. I was never against the manager, the President or anybody else. I only made my unhappiness known, to them first, but that does not mean I don’t have a normal relationship with them.’

It’s difficult to know what to make of these comments. Edinson Cavani is never going to actively speak out against his club or voice his frustration in a public forum. Perhaps he does feel good at the club, or perhaps he’s just trying to protect his reputation ahead of a move to a new club.

Either way The Gunners have to maintain their interest. They need a world-class centre-forward and Cavani fits the bill. He’d get all the game time (in his position) he could want at The Emirates. Surely he’d be open to a move?

What’s your take? Should Arsenal give up on signing Edinson Cavani?
