Manchester United added Daley Blind to their midfield during the summer transfer window, but you still get the feeling that they’re lacking in steel in the centre-of-the-park. There has to be a reason why The Red Devils just aren’t holding their own against their Premier League competition.
They’ve got all the attacking flair they need (Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao make up one of the most formidable forward lines in world football), but they lack grit and resolve where it counts. You get the feeling that players like Juan Mata need more protection if they’re to start showing their best form.
With Marouane Fellaini seemingly not up to the challenge and Daley Blind still adapting to a new role at a new club (he’s often played as a left-back rather than a defensive midfielder at International level), Manchester United could use another option.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are now winning the race to sign Real Madrid star Sami Khedira. Arsenal have been linked to the German ace for quite some time now, but it looks like Louis Van Gaal and co. are about to beat them to the punch.
It’s easy to see why The Red Devils would be interested. Sami Khedira is one of the best players in his position in the world. What’s more, his contractual situation makes him an extremely attractive prospect.
He’s only got a year left on his deal at the Bernabeu and it doesn’t look like he’s going to agree new terms. Real Madrid can either sell him on the cheap during the January transfer window or lose him for nothing in the summer. It’s not an easy decision to make.
The aforementioned source suggests that Manchester United are preparing a ‘significant’ contractual offer for the German. If this is true, it’s great news for the club. Sami Khedira could provide Van Gaal’s side with the backbone they seem to lack. Let’s just hope that the Dutchman is able to get one over on Arsene Wenger.
