Liverpool’s recent 3-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid served to highlight some of the major weaknesses prevalent within their squad. Fans will have wanted to see their squad put up a better fight, but despite starting strong, they faded fast.
In the end, the quality of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema shone through. If only The Reds had a few players of this ilk among their ranks. Unfortunately, they let Luis Suarez go. We can’t expect Raheem Sterling to take on Real Madrid on his own, can we?
I’ll get right to the point: as things currently stand, The Reds just don’t have enough quality options upfront. Things will improve when Daniel Sturridge returns from his injury lay-off, but I’d argue that this is still an area that Brendan Rodgers should look to improve.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are ‘preparing a mega £30m deal’ for Paris Saint Germain’s well-regarded forward, Ezequiel Lavezzi. This strikes me as very exciting news indeed. Could this Argentine ace provide The Reds with the firepower they currently lack?
First things first: Lavezzi is not in the same league as Luis Suarez. But playing in tandem with The Reds other new signings (the likes of Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and co), I’m sure he’ll help his new club to become a more effective attacking unit. He’s pacey, he’s intelligent and he uses the ball well.
Sure, his price-tag is a little off-putting, but I have little doubt that he’d prove to be a good investment. Besides, if The Reds want to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, they’re going to need to act tough in the transfer market. Spending this kind of money would (especially in the January transfer window), would be a major signal of intent.
With all that in mind, I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed that this deal comes to pass. Just imagine the impact that Lavezzi could have at Anfield.
