TaliscaI think it’s fair to say that we haven’t seen the best of Arsenal from an attacking perspective this season. Besides the second half of their game against Manchester City and the full 90-minutes against Galatasaray, The Gunners have been seriously lacking in this department.

This, combined with their lack of quality defensive options, has created a real problem for Arsene Wenger. At the moment his side just don’t look capable of competing for silverware.

Of course, there’s a chance that The Gunners will just click and start producing great performances on a regular basis. On the other hand, Arsene Wenger may need to reach out into the January transfer window in order to jump-start his season.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Arsenal are ready to step up their efforts to sign Benfica’s highly regarded midfielder/striker, Anderson Talisca. The source claims that if Lukas Podolski leaves the club, this giant Brazilian will be the man to replace him.

The 20-year-old is 6 foot 2 inches tall, he’s confident on the ball and he’s handy with the goal at his mercy. In 7 appearances for Benfica this season he’s found the back of the net 6 times. If he can keep up this kind of goal-scoring form, he’s likely to attract a good number of suitors.

It would make sense for Arsenal to try and snap him up now, before the competition heats up.

The aforementioned source claims that Arsenal have already sent scouts to watch Talisca in action for the Brazilian U21s, ahead of a £17m move. That’s a lot of money for a young player, but given his goal-scoring record, his physique, his technical ability and the rest of his attributes, I’d argue that this is cash worth spending.

Whether he’ll help Arsenal to compete in the big games (and to perform better overall) remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure: Arsene Wenger needs to do something and Talisca looks like a good choice.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners consider making a move for this Brazilian prodigy?
