Could Arsenal really be in the market for this £51m superstar?

Cavani 1Having already signed Alexis Sanchez this summer, it looked like the big business of Arsenal’s summer was all wrapped up. Whilst The Gunners still need to bring in another centre-back, their squad already looks pretty well rounded.

It’s a little surprising, therefore, to see Arsene Wenger get linked with a move for Paris Saint Germain’s world-class (and super-expensive) striker, Edinson Cavani. What should Arsenal fans make of this affair? Is it cause for genuine excitement?

The rumour is brought to us by The Metro, who carry a quote from Spanish journalist Kike Marin. The journo suggests that Arsene Wenger is a ‘huge fan’ of Cavani (who isn’t?) and that he’s keen to bring the Uruguayan to the Premier League this summer.

He also suggests that the deal hinges on PSG signing Angel Di Maria. If the Argentine is brought in, they’re more likely to be willing to let their Uruguayan go.

However things play out, Cavani won’t come cheap. The Metro suggest that he has a £51m price-tag. If Arsenal want him, they’re going to have to break their transfer record.

As it happens, Cavani certainly looks like a worthy investment. His goal-scoring record more or less speaks for itself. During his time at Napoli he scored 104 goals in 138 games. In his first season in French football, he has found the back of the net 25 times in 43 games.

He’s an out-and-out goal-scorer with real presence up front. I can’t help but feel that he’s wasted in Ligue 1. If he wants to really test himself, a move to the Premier League could be just the ticket.

What this would mean for Olivier Giroud remains to be seen, but it would be hard to see this as anything other than a huge step forward for The Gunners.

This deal still looks unlikely, but I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be chasing this expensive striker? Can they compete for Edinson Cavani?

What of the personal package. They said khedira “move” collapsed because of that. Can Cavani be any cheaper? So Arsenal is supposed to now be able to pay fee of more than twice what they said Khedira would cost and at least as much salary as him. Rather unlikely.
