Given the lack of balance present within Manchester United’s current squad, I’m surprised that Louis Van Gaal hasn’t acted quicker to bring fresh options in.
The problem is particularly prevalent down the flanks. So many of The Red Devils wingers just aren’t providing the goods at the moment. Nani looks completely disinterested. Antonio Valencia is a shadow of his former self. Ashley Young is… well he’s Ashley Young. He’s not really a player you can rely on.
Ander Herrera has been brought in to add a bit of freshness to The Red Devils’ midfield, but Van Gaal still needs to bring in a winger. Perhaps this is why Manchester United have been linked so strongly to Real Madrid star, Angel Di Maria.
The Argentine, who’s known as ‘The Assist King’ in La Liga, looks like a fantastic option. Unfortunately, he’d also come with a fantastic price-tag. The Mirror claim he’d set United back at least £50m. Yikes.
Whilst The Red Devils don’t lack for financial firepower, it may be smarter to seek out another player who could provide a similar impact for a small fee.
If this is something that Louis Van Gaal is considering, he’d do well to turn to Atletico Madrid’s wing-wizard Arda Turan. After all, Turan is a key part of the team that led Atletico to La Liga glory last season (and reached the Champions League final). He made 46 appearances, scored 9 goals and made 6 assists.
Whilst he’s not statistically as good as Angel Di Maria, he’s quietly effective. He’s got excellent technical ability, he links up well with his team-mates and he’s a smart cookie. It’s easy enough to see the 27-year-old making an impact in the Premier League.
According to The Mirror, The Turkish ace could be available for as little as £15m. If that’s the case, The Red Devils would be foolish to miss out. Let’s just hope that Van Gaal feels the same way.
