William Carvalho (Portugal):With both Arsenal and Manchester United looking to add a bit of steel to their midfield, it was only a matter of time before they came up against each other in competition for a player.

According to The Metro, Manchester United will enter the battle to sign Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder William Carvalho, but only if they fail to sign Juventus battler Arturo Vidal.

Arsenal fans may now find themselves in an odd position. Whilst they won’t want Manchester United to sign a top class player like Arturo Vidal (thus increasing The Red Devil’s chances of winning the Premier League next season), that deal could end up being essential to Arsenal’s own transfer business.

It’s also worth noting that William Carvalho and Arturo Vidal are hardly comparable players. Vidal’s an excellent all rounder, somebody who’s capable of contributing offensively and defensively. Carvalho on the other hand, is a defensive midfielder. He’s a disciplined, physical presence who could add plenty of bite to a Premier League midfield.

As such it’s a little weird that Manchester United are adopting an either/or approach to their transfer machinations. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to watch this one play out.

Both players have big price-tags. Arturo Vidal would be the more expensive of the two, but Carvalho’s not exactly a bargain bin option. The Gunners have already had a £24m bid turned down.

Both players are good options, but I’m sure that Manchester United fans would prefer to sign Arturo Vidal. In fact, that might end up being the best result for both clubs. United will get the player they really want, whilst The Gunners will get the defensive anchor that they need in the centre-of-the-park.

Louis Van Gaal is a smart cookie. He knows what changes he needs to make to his squad better than the British Press. Vidal looks like a smart signing. Carvalho looks like a so-so one. Let’s just hope that things work out well for both Manchester United and Arsenal.

What’s your take? Will Manchester United sign Arturo Vidal? Where will William Carvalho end up?
