Given that Manchester United have lost both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer, it’s a little surprising that the club has been so slow to bring in new options.
After all, both those players have been essential to United’s success in recent times. They were two of The Red Devils’ most experienced footballers. They were leaders. Better still, they were top quality defenders. They did what they were paid to do extremely well.
Whilst Luke Shaw has been drafted in, I think it’s fair to say that Louis Van Gaal could use some more defensive options. It certainly doesn’t help that Luke Shaw is out injured for the next four weeks and that United have already sent Patrice Evra packing (d’oh!).
This brings me to The Red Devils’ continued interest in Dutch ace, Daley Blind. Given the versatility of the 24-year-old Ajax star and the quality he displayed during the World Cup, he’s beginning to look like a great option.
Blind has experience playing as both a defensive midfielder and a left back. He may even be able to do a job as an emergency centre-back, should the occasion call for it. I would argue that this makes him a perfect fit for Manchester United.
He’d be able to fill in at left-back, whilst Luke Shaw recovers. After that, he’d move into the midfield, where he’d add a bit more competitive edge.
As it happens, it looks as though a deal could be close. According to The Metro, Daley Blind has been spotted ‘house hunting’ ahead of a £15m move to Manchester United. Given that the player in question has previously talked-up a potential move to Old Trafford, it’s becoming easier and easier to see him in a Manchester United shirt.
Whilst he wouldn’t be the biggest signing that Van Gaal makes this summer, he could prove to be one of the most important.
