ReusWith Luis Suarez long gone, The Reds are still on the hunt for a truly world-class signing. They’ve spent a lot of money and have brought in some good options, but they still haven’t landed any body approaching Suarez’s level of ability. But that could be about to change.

If the papers are to be believed, Brendan Rodgers hasn’t finished spending this summer. He could even be set to bring in his biggest signing yet.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claims that The Reds are ‘known to be keen admirers of Borussia Dortmund’s superstar forward, Marco Reus. Who isn’t?

But the source goes one step further, suggesting that Liverpool has been ‘alerted’ to the players ‘availability’. This follows Reus turning down a new Borussia Dortmund contract.

As it happens, his agent, Dirk Hebel recently spoke out about the player’s future: ‘Marco would make any big European team stronger. That’s why it’s completely normal that a number of these major European teams are interested in signing him.’

That’s not exactly a ‘come get me’ plea, but it’s not a ‘hands off’ either, is it?

Whether Liverpool are able to compete for Marco Reus remains to be seen. For a start, it’s going to take a lot of money to convince Dortmund to sell, even with the player’s contractual situation. The Reds have already spent a lot of money this summer and may not have enough left over.

Then there’s the player himself – would Reus be up for a move to Anfield? Whilst The Reds can offer him Champions League football, they have just lost their best player and could struggle next season. They’re not an established presence among the European elite by any means. This may strike him as a sideways move.

But these challenges shouldn’t prevent Brendan Rodgers from trying to make this deal happen. The Reds need quality and Marco Reus is one of the best player’s available on the market. He’d be foolish not to give it a go, however unlikely it looks at this moment in time.

What’s your take? Should The Reds swoop in for Marco Reus? Could they really sign a player with his standing in the game?
