Could Manchester United be about to close this £50m deal?

Angel Di Maria (Argentina):Manchester United have done a few crafty bits of business this summer – they’ve brought in Southampton’s young left-back Luke Shaw, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo – but they’ve yet to snap up a marquee signing.

After last season I can’t help but feel that The Red Devils need to re-announce themselves on the European scene. They need to make a signing that makes other clubs sit-up and take notice.

That’s why I’ve been following Manchester United’s interest in Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria with such keen interest. Isn’t this exactly the kind of signing that Louis Van Gaal needs to make at this moment in time?

With Manchester United’s wingers struggling to make their mark, Angel Di Maria looks like the perfect tonic. He’s significantly better than the club’s current options: Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and co.

In La Liga he’s known as ‘The Assist King’. He always seems to ghost into dangerous positions and he’s got the nous and the ability to set-up his team-mates. He’s also capable of scoring the occasional goal (he got 11 in total last season).

The Metro suggest that Angel Di Maria has asked to leave The Bernabeu this summer. With the addition of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos to this Real Madrid squad competition is heating up. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Argentine ace were ready to move on.

The Metro also suggests that Angel Di Maria could cost The Red Devils as much as £50m (whilst also demanding £200k-a-week in wages). In other words, he’s not going to come cheap. Louis Van Gaal needs to make certain that he’s making the right decision before he signs off on this deal.

Still, what a statement this signing would make. Angel Di Maria is the real deal – he may even be good enough to put Manchester United back on the pathway to success.

What’s your take? Are Manchester United right to try and close a £50m deal for Angel Di Maria? Are there other options that they should be considering?
