Former Arsenal star ‘available for sale’: should Wenger bring him back?

Alex Song (Barcelona)I’m not sure that Arsenal fans have too many fond memories of Alex Song. Whilst he conjured up the occasional good moment and carried out his defensive-duties in a particularly Arsenal-esque manner (that’s to say, he rejected them completely whenever an opportunity to bomb forward presented itself), he always looked like a particularly self-serving fellow.

Maybe it was his demeanour, or the fact that he walked about every where with those huge, anti-social headphones, but Alex Song never really seemed to make an effort to ingratiate himself with Arsenal fans.

By the time that he agreed a £15m deal to Barcelona in the summer of 2012, all fans could muster was a shrug of the shoulders.

Curiously enough, however, Arsenal still haven’t managed to replace him. There’s nobody in their squad who can offer Alex Song’s combination of pace, physical presence and defensive nous.

Mathieu Flamini comes close, but he’s not the complete package in the same way that Alex Song was. What’s more, the Frenchman’s not as good at supporting attacks as the Cameroonian international was during his time at The Emirates.

With Song (hilariously) failing to make an impact at the Nou Camp, there have been rumours that Song could one day head back to Arsenal. Indeed, The Metro claim that Barcelona have ‘made him available for sale’ and note that both Arsenal and Tottenham are interested. It looks like Song will be heading back to North London, one way or another.

The Metro also highlighted Alex Song’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, where he nominates three former Arsenal team-mates. Is this a sign that he’s still got Arsenal on the brain?

It’s hard to say and it’s foolish to speculate, but I can’t help but feel that Arsenal would benefit were this deal to go ahead. They need a physical presence in the centre-of-the-park. More than that, they need more defensive personnel.

Song’s versatility (he can play as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back) makes him a good fit. It’ll certainly be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger is willing to give him another shot.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners grant Alex Song another opportunity at The Emirates?

Who is better Arteta or Alex Song. If it is Song get him back. To me Arteta is Mr Sideways, and he is 32 years old and 5’9″. Alex Song moves forwards meaningfully and is 26 years old and 6’1″. So maybe we should sign Alex Song eh?
