Why Spurs need to win the battle for this £10m target:

|

Ben DaviesAs other clubs around them are bolstering their squad and adding some fine additions to their team, Spurs have been somewhat slow to act so far this summer. I’d say that it’s about time that they sprung into life and started getting their ducks in line for next season.

Most Spurs fans will have been disappointed with last season’s overall showing. Whilst Tottenham certainly had their moments, the fact that they didn’t secure Champions League action will have left a bad taste in the mouth. This is particularly true given the amount of cash that was spent last summer.

Gareth Bale was replaced by a number of talented, expensive players, most of whom have failed to make their mark in the Premier League. That puts them in a tough position this summer: they’re not really in a position to spend big, but they do need to make a few changes to their squad.

In particular, they could do with a new option in the left-back department. According to The Mirror, Mauricio Pochettino is hot on the trail of Swansea City’s flying full-back, Ben Davies. They also suggest that Liverpool are interested in the Welsh international and that Brendan Rodgers had an £8m bid ‘knocked back’ earlier this week.

This is evidence of how highly regarded Ben Davies is at Swansea City. Garry Monk and co. won’t sell up unless somebody comes in with a bid that they consider to be fair. The aforementioned source suggests that if Spurs offer £10m, The Swans will be willing to let Davies go.

At 21-years-old, Davies still has his whole career ahead of him. He’s nippy, confident on the ball and he loves to provide support during attacks. He’s also an astute defender, who slides into tackles with glee and makes a decent number of interceptions per game. I’d say he’s worthy of his price-tag already and he’s only going to get better and better.

So let’s hope Liverpool’s interest dwindles and that Spurs are able to close the deal.

What’s your take? Is Ben Davies the right choice for Spurs?

I have been a Tottenham supporter for 12 years and I cannot remember a transfer window where Levy has done right by Spurs.
Maybe it is because he is not a football guy, I just hope this season is exciting!!

Ben Davies would be a bargain at £15 million pounds, never mind £10 m. As a Wales and Spurs supporter, I have been impressed by his intelligence a a footballer, something which is lacking in all our current full backs. He has played in the centre of defence on one or two occasions and coped really well – a real old head on young shoulders. I was amazed two seasons ago when Gareth Bale won both the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year when Ben Davies was not even mentioned.

That is a good eyeball test.
Let’s hope this deal gets done, because we can’t replace Bale, but we can try to at lease get something going which resembles him
