Should Arsenal trigger this £8.5m release clause?

Loic RemyArsenal have already secured what may well be the biggest deal of their summer. They’ve brought in Alexis Sanchez, having spent between £32-35m on the former Barcelona ace.

But Arsenal fans will hope that Sanchez isn’t the only addition made to their forward line-up this summer.

Last year, this fan group was forced to watch Olivier Giroud toil away alone game-after-game. Whilst the Frenchman is pretty good with his back-to-goal and is more than capable of bringing his team-mates into the game, he’s not got any pace and isn’t going to trick his way past a defender.

Alexis Sanchez will provide another option, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsene Wenger opted to double down on new recruits.

Take Loic Remy, for instance. The Gunners have been linked for him all season long. In truth, they’ve been linked to the French forward for the last 12 months. Could they finally be about to close the deal?

According to The Mirror, his current club, Queens Park Rangers are ‘confident’that they’ll be able to keep hold of Loic Remy. The source notes that Loic Remy’s release clause works on a sliding scale. In other words, top four sides can purchase him for as little as £8.5m. Top six sides can purchase him for £11m. On the other hand, teams outside the top six will have to cough up £15m if they want him to join their squad.

This means that Newcastle (where he spent last season on loan, scoring 14 goals in 27 appearances) would have to pay £6.5m more for Remy than Arsenal. QPR may be ‘confident’, but it strikes me that Arsenal are in as strong a position as ever.

If Wenger is interested in the Frenchman (and why wouldn’t he be?), this deal should be relatively easy to close. I’m sure that Loic Remy would jump at the opportunity to play for The Gunners, so this could prove to be a match made in heaven.

With Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Loic Remy leading the attack, The Gunners should carry plenty of threat next season. Make it happen Arsene Wenger!

What’s your take? Is Loic Remy a worthy target for The Gunners?
