Liverpool have had a busy summer transfer window, haven’t they? Brendan Rodgers must have known that Luis Suarez would be leaving at some stage, because he’s been spending left, right and centre.
I’m sure that fans will hope that all these new players will gel quickly within the team. They should learn from the example of Tottenham, who brought in a tranche of highly regarded footballers, only for most of them to struggle to make their mark.
Whilst there is some cause for concern, Brendan Rodgers is a smart cookie. He’s brought in players like Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert – players with bag-loads of Premier League experience.
If The Mirror is to be believed, The Reds are currently chasing another Premier League footballer. The source suggests that Brendan Rodgers is in the market for Chelsea’s star left back, Ryan Bertrand.
It’s also claimed that Liverpool have already lodged a £6m bid for Bertrand, which was rejected out of hand. It’s thought that The Reds would need to offer at least £8m to convince Chelsea to sell up.
After enjoying a break-out season back in 2012/12, Bertrand’s progress slowed significantly last year. He made only 3 appearances for The Blues, before earning a loan move to Aston Villa, where he made a further 10 appearances. I’m sure he’ll have been disappointed with this return.
He’s now 24-years-old and needs regular football if he’s to ever maximise his potential. He’s certainly good enough to make it at a top club. There’s a touch of Ashley Cole about his poise on the ball, his tackling ability and his smart running.
I can’t help but feel that he’d be an excellent addition to this Liverpool squad. With that in mind, I hope that The Reds are willing to fork out £8m in return for his signature. He’s got what it takes to make an instant impact at Anfield and he deserves another shot at the top. Let’s hope Brendan Rodgers gives him this.
