John O'Shea (Sunderland)Here’s a rumour that you probably didn’t expect to see any time soon. According to The Metro, Spurs are hot on the trail of Sunderland defender John O’Shea.

I wonder how Tottenham fans will take this news. Will they be popping open the bubbly, partying in the streets, setting off fireworks and the like, or will the news merely create a collective groan?

The proper answer can probably be found somewhere in the middle. Whilst John O’Shea is a difficult player to get excited about, he could still prove to be a decent signing.

For a start, he’s massively experienced. At 33-years-old, he’s played more than 500 professional games of football, most of which have been at the top level. 393 of those appearances were for Manchester United during a time when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the height of his power. You don’t make that many appearances for a club like that without having something a little special about you.

This brings me to his hard-working nature. The man seemed to force his way into United’s team-sheet through sheer will alone. Whenever there’s an interception or a tackle to be made, he’s there. He’s always been an energetic type, but he balances this out with a certain level of effectiveness.

Manchester United let him go three years ago, but he’s still been performing to a good level at Sunderland. The Black Cats are now regular relegation fodder, but his stand-out performances at the back have kept them in the running.

This fact wont be lost on new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino. If the ex-Southampton man is looking for an experienced defender, then John O’Shea is probably a good option.

The Metro note that O’Shea could be available for as little as £3m (Sunderland rate him, but he is 33-years-old). As such, it’s hardly a big gamble for Spurs to take. If he comes in and does a good job: great! If he doesn’t: so what?

With that in mind, perhaps it’s time to start taking these rumours seriously. Perhaps John O’Shea wouldn’t be a bad signing after all.

What’s your take? Should Spurs swoop in for John O’Shea? Should they be considering other options?
