Last season Brendan Rodgers attempted to add a little cut and thrust down the Liverpool flanks by bringing in Victor Moses. The Chelsea loanee looked like a good addition to the squad at the time, thanks to his pace, goal threat and vitality.
Unfortunately, he never really met his potential at Anfield. Moses made only 20 appearances for The Reds and scored only 2 goals. He spent most of the season operating as a bit-part player and when he was given a game time, he looked a little over-awed.
So it’s back to the drawing board again for Brendan Rodgers. How will he find a way of adding even more threat to Liverpool’s already deadly forward line this summer?
This brings me to Xherdan Shaqiri, a player Liverpool have been linked to for a number of months now. Could the little Swiss ace be the answer?
According to The Mirror, The Reds are smack-bang in the middle of ‘preliminary talks’ with Shaqiri’s club, Bayern Munich, over a £16m deal for the fleet-footed winger. The source suggests that Rodgers is keen to get the deal wrapped up as quickly as possible, just in case his price-tag rises during the World Cup.
That’s good news for Liverpool fans, who are keen to see new players come through the door as quickly as possible. After all, The Reds came damn close to Premier League glory last season. The right additions this summer could tip them over the edge (in a good way).
Xherdan Shaqiri certainly looks like he fits the billing. The pacey winger is supremely comfortable on the ball and offers a certain amount of unpredictability that should see him make a mark in the Premier League. He’s also pretty handy in front of goal. In 65 appearances for Bayern Munich, he’s scored 15 goals.
Unfortunately, he’s started to struggle for game time at the Allianz Arena. Last season he made just 26 appearances for the German Champions. If The Reds were to come knocking, I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity for a change of scenery.
Now we just need to see whether The Reds can cough up the £16m necessary to close this deal.
