Alex SongWho here remembers Alex Song? He was the Cameroonian international who used to run around for Arsenal a few years back, before he got stars in his eyes and left the Premier League to move to Barcelona.

It struck pundits as an odd move at the time. After all, Song had just broken into the first team at the Emirates and could have developed into an important component of a side that wasn’t a million miles away from being title contenders (as they’ve proven this year). Instead, he traded all this for a move to the Nou Camp, where he’d be competing directly with players like Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano.

It wasn’t a smart move. Since the move two years ago, he’s made just 64 appearances for Barca, many of which were as a substitute. Compare this to his last couple of years at Arsenal, where he notched up 88 games, most of which were as a starter.

It’s also worth noting that in his last season at the Emirates he registered 14 assists (largely thanks to Robin Van Persie’s remarkable form that year). Since moving to Barca, he’s made just one assist. He’s hardly enjoying the best years of his career, is he?

That’s why he has started to pick up links to other clubs once again. It’s thought that he’s keen to seek out a new challenge and wants to find a team that will offer him regular game-time once again.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that both Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in Alex Song, who’s currently valued at around £8m.

It strikes me that he’d be a good fit for Liverpool, who are very strong moving forward but weak at the back. Song would provide protection in front of the back four and may be able to stop any Crystal Palace-style implosions from occurring in the future.

If he’s really available for just £8m, then this looks to be a no brainer. He’s got Premier League experience, he’s fired up and he’s looking for a change of scenery. Let’s see if Liverpool can provide him with this.

What’s your take? Should The Reds make a move for Alex Song? Will he help to shore up their leaky defense?
