Should Liverpool snap up another of Brendan Rodger’s former charges?

Steven CaulkerFor all the good times that Liverpool have enjoyed this season (including some big wins over some impressive competition), I’m sure that Brendan Rodgers will look back with regret at his team’s defensive frailty.

If The Reds were a little better equipped in this area of the pitch, perhaps they wouldn’t have shipped two goals against Chelsea. Perhaps they wouldn’t have let a 3-0 lead against Crystal Palace turn into a 3-3 draw.

It’s these results that have cost Liverpool the Premier League title and as a such, they should be the key driver for any transfer activity that occurs this summer.

In other words, Brendan Rodgers needs to set aside enough time to find a decent defender or two this summer. With Kolo Toure, Jose Enrique and Aly Cissokho all disappointing this season, it’s clear that more options are need.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is keen to ‘capitalise’ on Cardiff City’s relegation by snapping up one of their best players. The player in question is centre-back Steven Caulker.

Despite playing alongside some rather average defenders, Caulker has managed to have a decent year. Sure, he’s been a part of a back-four that has been comprehensively outclassed on numerous occasions this season, but he has personally managed to impress with his positional nous, his tough tackling and his distribution from the back. He’s also chipped in with 5 goals.

Brendan Rodgers will know exactly what Caulker can offer. He managed the English centre-back  whilst he was on loan at Swansea City between 2011/12. In this sense, he’s making a fairly well informed decision.

The aforementioned source claims that Caulker has a relegation release clause written into his Cardiff City contract. Unfortunately, they don’t mention how much cash it would take to trigger this clause. Still, it’s safe to assume that he’s within Liverpool’s financial reach.

Of course, Caulker won’t be able to fix all of The Reds defensive issues on his own, but he’d make for an excellent start. Make it happen Brendan!

What’s your take? Should The Reds make a move for Steven Caulker, one of Brendan Rodger’s former charges?
