Should Arsenal compete with Manchester United for this £35m man?

Thomas MullerAfter the rumours linking Manchester United to Bayern Munich’s midfield sensation Thomas Muller began to pop up, it was only a matter of time before other clubs started to pile in. The German is among world football’s best and if there’s any chance he could move on this summer, there are sure to be plenty of interested parties.

Take, for instance, The International Business Time‘s claim that both Arsenal and Liverpool are in the market for Muller. My initial reaction to these claims is that after recent spates of spending, The Reds probably can’t afford to spend big this summer (unless, of course, they sell one of their star players). This could leave Arsenal alone to battle it out with Manchester United (and anybody else who decides to pile in this summer).

Manchester United’s need for a goal-scoring midfielder is considerably higher than Arsenal’s (who already have Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla among their ranks), but I’m sure that Arsene Wenger wouldn’t turn his nose up at the opportunity to sign Thomas Muller. It wasn’t like he needed to sign Ozil last summer. The German just became available and Wenger jumped at the opportunity.

Could the same thing be about to happen when the transfer window re-opens?

It’s thought that Muller could be available for £35m, which isn’t outside of Arsenal’s current financial reach, but would severely limit their ability to spend big on a world class striker this summer (which I would argue is a necessity).

Still, it’s not like Muller would fail to provide Arsenal with value for money. This season he has scored 25 goals in 49 games. Last year he scored 23 times in 47 games. These are the kind of returns that most strikers would kill for.

Muller is renowned for his use of space, his late runs into the box and his positional awareness. These are qualities that would make him an excellent fit for the Premier League. After six years playing for the Bayern Munich first team, Muller may be ready for a new challenge. It’s up to Arsenal to provide him with this.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners move in for this Bayern Munich star? Will Thomas Muller be too difficult to sign?

Muller wouldn’t leave Bayern for a team he’s knocked out twice in the CL. Let’s be realistic about this and considering he’s said he isn’t leaving anytime soon, I think he’s very much out of Arsenal’s reach.
