Should Arsenal REALLY be interested in this £2m Ligue 1 star?

Salomon KalouArsenal just can’t seem to escape links to Salomon Kalou. There’s nary a transfer window that goes by without the Gunners getting linked to the former Chelsea star.

It must be The French connection. The Ivorian centre-forward currently plays for Lille where he has scored 26 goals in 63 games.

That’s a fairly decent return. But, it’s not mind-blowing by any means and it’s probably not good enough for him to earn a move to a big club.

That said, it’s certainly an improvement on his goal-scoring record for Chelsea. He spent six years at Stamford Bridge, made 251 appearances for The Blues and scored just 60 goals. That’s just  over one goal every five games, which isn’t great for a forward.

So yes, there’s some evidence that he’s improving. Still, it’s difficult to see why Arsenal might be interested. According to The Standard, Kalou is intent on leaving Lille this summer and The Gunners are ‘considering’ a move. Contain your excitement Arsenal fans. The source also claims that he could cost Arsene Wenger as little as £2.5m.

The Professor is known for his transfer market bargains, but for a player to earn ‘bargain’ status, they have to deliver good value for money. We know that Salomon Kalou isn’t a natural goal-scorer. He won’t deliver what the club needs at this moment in time.

So why would Arsenal be interested? Just because a player’s available on the cheap doesn’t mean that he’s a ‘must-buy’.

Arsene Wenger will be well aware that he needs to add some quality to the squad this summer. He’ll be under a lot of pressure to bring players in, but surely he can do better than Kalou?

The Ivorian forward is already 28-years-old after all. It’s not like he’s some young starlet who could come good somewhere down the road. He’s already shown us what he can do and is now probably at the peak of his game. I’d say that he’s found his level in Ligue 1.

Let’s just hope that Wenger steers clear.

What’s your take? Is Salomon Kalou a good option for Arsenal? Should they start looking at better options?
