Alex SandroVery few people would have expected Manchester United to do quite as well as they did last Tuesday night. Bayern Munich were in complete control of their two legs against Arsenal in the previous round, but didn’t have everything their own way against Manchester United. The game ended 1-1 and if The Red Devils can now grab an away goal, they’ll be in a very strong position.

That’s to say, that despite all the criticism that has been directed Manchester United’s way, there’s still something to build on at Old Trafford. If David Moyes can bring in the right players this summer, The Red Devils will come back much stronger.

The former Everton man is certainly going to have to spend some time looking at his defensive options. For a start, Patrice Evra’s contract will expire this summer and there’s no clear replacement available at Old Trafford. Somebody will have to be brought in to fill the left-back berth.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are ready to do battle with Chelsea with the winner earning the signature of FC Porto’s classy left-back, Alex Sandro. They even suggest that the Brazilian is David Moyes’ ‘No. 1 pick’.

Since moving to Porto in 2011, Sandro has been essential in helping his side to win the Portuguese domestic title twice. He has also earned six caps for his international side and attracted a decent amount of suitors in the process. It’s easy to see why Manchester United might be interested.

Given his attacking flair, it strikes me that he’s the perfect replacement for Patrice Evra. Sandro gets up and down the flanks so quickly, he’s not afraid to take people on and is always looking to create opportunities for his team-mates. He’s also extremely handy in a scrap, works hard and won’t shirk his defensive duties. He’s a good all-rounder.

With The Mirror claiming that he could cost £15m, I’d say that he falls squarely within Manchester United’s financial wheelhouse. All that remains to be seen is when David Moyes will make his move.

What’s your take? How do Manchester United go about replacing Patrice Evra? Would FC Porto’s Alex Sandro be a good solution?
