Talk about finding form at exactly the right point of the season. Liverpool are currently the team playing the best football in the Premier League and as a result, they’ve motored past the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City to the top of the Premier League table.
I’m sure that City are going to push The Reds all the way, but their achievements this season have been quite remarkable. If Brendan Rodgers can keep this up, this year and next, Liverpool are likely to win silverware at some point.
This eventuality will be all the more likely if Brendan Rodgers looks to add further bodies to his already plenty talented squad. With The Reds in the Champions League next season, they’ll need all the help they can get if they want to compete on multiple fronts.
And despite The Reds remaining seriously competitive in the business end of the season, the papers continue to churn out headlines regarding who the club are looking to sign next. You have to take it all with a pinch of salt of course, but it’s fun to speculate nonetheless.
Take, for instance, The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are ‘in pole position’ to sign Real Madrid’s forgotten man, Fabio Coentrao. The source claims that he’d cost just £11.5m, which is significantly less than the 30m euros that Madrid spent on him back in July 2011. In fact, for a player of his talents, it’s a relative bargain.
In his first two seasons at the Bernabeu, Coentrao made 63 appearances for Real Madrid. This season he’s played just 12 times. He’s clearly getting squeezed out and I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity for a change in scenery.
At 26-years-old, Coentrao should be entering his prime. Instead his career needs a serious kick up the butt. Moving to an ambitious side like Liverpool could help to fire him up once more and get him performing to the level that we know he’s capable of.
Here’s hoping that Brendan Rodgers can make yet another smart signing – one that will help The Reds to perform even better next season.
