Ilkay GundoganBarcelona’s transfer ban for the next 14 months seems to have taken the footballing world by storm. The fall-out will effect not only Barcelona, but also the teams who tend to compete with the Spanish powerhouse for similar types of players.

The La Liga titans will no longer be able to stand in the way as teams like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Manchester United snap up all of Europe’s best talent. Could Barcelona be in danger of being left behind?

Barca can call upon both Lionel Messi and Neymar, so I have a feeling that they’ll be alright. Still, that doesn’t mean that teams like Manchester United shouldn’t look to profit from the situation.

According to CaughtOffside, that’s exactly what The Red Devils are looking to do. The source claims that David Moyes is now willing to make a move for ‘Borussia Dortmund battler’, Ilkay Gundogan.

They suggest that Barcelona were interested in the German, but that their transfer ban has forced them to pull out of any potential deal. This, naturally enough, leaves the door wide open for Manchester United to sneak in and get their man.

Prior to his back injury, which has kept the 23-year-old out for large stretches of the season, Gundogan was making quite a name for himself. The Dortmund ace is always at perfect ease on the ball, he’s a quick, precise passer and he’s a hard-worker. If he’s not orchestrating attacks, you’ll likely find him chasing back, making interceptions and sliding into challenges.

For my money, he’s a complete midfielder. He’ll need some time to convalesce from his long-term injury of course, but there’s no doubting that he has all the talent necessary to make it at Old Trafford.

So here’s hoping that Manchester United do have a clear, unimpeded run at the player. He could be exactly what the club needs to awaken from it’s slumber. The Star suggested a few days back that Gundogan is currently worth about £25m. I’d say that that would be a price worth paying for The Red Devils.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United snap up this German ace? Were Barcelona ever really interested in him?
