Can Arsenal still pull off this £37m superstar signing?

Julian DraxlerI can’t help but wonder what Arsenal could have achieved if they had made more effort in the January transfer window. At that stage in the season, The Gunners were sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table. But after tightening the purse strings during the transfer window, the Gunners are now fighting for fourth place.

Whilst most of Arsenal’s rivals didn’t spend big during January (and Manchester United’s big-spending has had little effect), these other teams have better squads than the Gunners and less injury problems. Without Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey, Arsene Wenger’s side has looked pretty shaky.

Things could have been different if The Gunners had signed their major January target, Julian Draxler. Like Mesut Ozil did last summer, the German ace would have pumped considerable levels of belief into the Arsenal faithful.

His pace, dribbling ability and goal-threat would also have made a difference during the business end of the season. Julian Draxler is only 20-years-old, but it’s clear that he’s the real deal. He’s a supremely talented young footballer, with the technique and drive necessary to make it at a top club.

Unfortunately, the Gunners ended up missing out on his signature and they’re now suffering the consequences.

Of course, there has been a great deal of speculation as to whether Arsene Wenger will go back in for Draxler during the summer transfer window. January’s failure could end up being summer’s success.

But that won’t be the case if Schalke 04, his current club, get their way. The Bundesliga side are desperate to keep hold of the youngster. The club’s sporting director Horst Heldt even told the press: “I believe that Draxler will stay with us”. (Source: The Metro)

Still, I bet he’ll change his tune if Arsenal cough up enough money. A month or so back, The Star claimed that £37m could be enough to tempt the Bundesliga side into a deal. Having already spent that kind of money on Mesut Ozil, it’ll be interesting to see if Arsenal are capable of pulling off another big signing of this kind.

I certainly hope that they are. The Gunners desperately need to round out their squad. They need players who can help elevate the club to the next level. They need winners. I think Julian Draxler can help in all these regards.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal really afford Julian Draxler?

Sorry, but a very naïve comment. If Schalke04 decided not to sell Draxler in January, that was the end of any discussion. Neither you nor I know what discussions took place and it just may be that an agreement was reached for the summer.
Just because Arsenal want tosign any player it does not mean that they have a right t his signature.
