Can Manchester United still tempt this £32m talent away?

Ilkay GundoganThe countdown to the summer transfer window has begun in earnest for Manchester United fans. The Red Devil’s season has, in fact, been over for quite some time. They’re out of the domestic cup competitions. They’re highly unlikely to finish in the top four.

Once Bayern Munich have put United out of their misery in the Champions League, there’ll be absolutely nothing left to play for. So what else is there to do but look ahead to the future? If David Moyes uses the club’s cash in an intelligent manner, there could well be better times ahead.

The need for two-or-three more world class signings is obvious. Who David Moyes will bring in is more open-ended.

One of the players that Manchester United have been monitoring for a long time is Bayern Munich’s crocked midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. The German has been out of the game for an age as he recovers from a back injury. Somehow this hasn’t managed to put a stop to all the rumours linking him with a move away from Dortmund.

At 23-years-old, the German has bags of potential. When he’s fit he oozes confidence on the ball, can pull off killer passes and help his side to dominate games. He’s also positionally astute and his late runs into the penalty area often catch opponents unaware.

The attacking aspects of his game are very exciting indeed, but Gundogan’s also defensively astute. He’s quick along the deck and tough in the tackle. He can be difficult to contend with on his day.

I’d love to see him play alongside a fully settled Juan Mata. If these two made up Manchester United’s central midfield, I’m sure things would be different next season.

With his Dortmund contract running down, fans are keen for him to lay out his future, one way or another. His agent recently offered the following comments:

“On whether he will compete in the World Cup, I am not the one to give out reliable forecasts. We will not speculate about when he will come back. We are convinced he will be healthy but we cannot measure this in terms of weeks or months.”

“As for the contract, it will not be a long, dragged-out affair. I think it is not going to be more than a matter of weeks.” (Source: The Mirror)

It still seems like nothing has been decided. Now it’s up to Manchester United to slip in and tempt him away. The Mirror claim that if Moyes offers £32m to Dortmund, a deal could be agreed. Let’s hope he’s ready to spend big once more!

What’s your take? Is Ilkay Gundogan a good choice for Manchester United?
