Yevhen KonoplyankaIt’s all over! As we rolled into February, the January transfer window slammed shut and all the transfer madness came to an end. Don’t you miss it already?

Liverpool fans must have found the whole experience thoroughly underwhelming. Whilst they’ve shipped out players like Adam Morgan and Tiago Ilori, they’ve failed to bring anybody in.

Last year Brendan Rodgers signed Daniel Sturridge during the January transfer window and kick-started the club’s revival. This year the club has decided to sit still and watch the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea wrestle away initiative.

But it’s not like Brendan Rodgers didn’t give it a good shot. We know that the Reds missed out on Mohamed Salah as they were unable to match Chelsea when it came to financial fisticuffs.

And now, thanks to The Mirror, we also know that Liverpool attempted (and failed) to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka on deadline day. The Reds had sent Ian Ayre to the Ukraine to attempt to wrap up a £16m deal for the twinkle-toed winger, but he came back empty handed.

The Mirror suggest that there were ‘extensive negotiations’, but that the two clubs involved (Liverpool and Dnipro) couldn’t agree terms. They also carry a quote from the players agent, James Lippett, who clearly wanted the deal to go ahead:

“Absolutely gutted, can’t put it in to words”.

Makes you wonder, exactly how close were Liverpool to getting their man?

When partnered with Brendan Rodgers missing out on Mohamed Salah, the January transfer window will surely go down as a big disappointment for the Reds. With the club firmly in contention for a Champions League position this season, they could have done with a new body or two to freshen things up.

They’re well placed at the moment, but Manchester City look like a real force, Chelsea have recruited well and Manchester United have spent big. Heck, even Arsenal brought a player in.

With Victor Moses not exactly setting Anfield alight, signing a talented young winger like Yevhen Konoplyanka would have been a smart move. Here’s hoping that the club’s failure to get their man doesn’t come back to haunt them.

What’s your take? Will the Reds regret missing out on the Ukraine international?
