Andros TownsendNow that we’ve reached the end of the January transfer window, I’m sure most Manchester United fans will agree that the club’s better placed than it was a month ago.

Spending £37.1m on one of the Premier League’s most gifted midfielders will do that for you. Juan Mata’s going to significantly strengthen the Red Devil’s creativity, whilst simultaneously weakening Chelsea.

More importantly, it’s the first time that this David Moyes led Manchester United side have shown real ambition.

Yes, they went after Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara last summer, but those deals were never likely to happen. This time, however, they went after a marquee signing and they got their man. That’s a big step forward for David Moyes and the club. It provides plenty of hope for the future.

It was also interesting to see The Mirror claim that Manchester United spent much of deadline day attempting to pull off an audacious swap deal for Tottenham. They suggest that David Moyes was looking to ship Nani off to White Hart Lane, with the North London side’s gifted winger, Andros Townsend coming back in the other direction.

Whilst I’m not surprised that Spurs rejected the deal (Daniel Levy must have waited all of two seconds before he reached his decision), this story provides further evidence that the club is heading in the right direction.

I’m amazed that Nani is still at the club. His career has been stagnating over the course of the last couple of seasons and he’s begun to look less and less interested. When he first arrived at the club, he gave fans plenty of reasons to be excited. As time has passed all the promise seems to have faded away.

Andros Townsend, on the other hand, has just started to make a mark at International level and has boundless potential. His ability to beat his man and make it to by-line is more or less unmatched and I’m sure he’s going to go from strength to strength over the coming years.

Whilst I doubt we’ll ever see him in a Manchester United shirt, he still represents a smart transfer target.

Perhaps David Moyes is the right man for the job after all?

What’s your take? Would you have liked to see Manchester United swap Nani for Andros Townsend? Are the Red Devils on the road to recovery?
