Marouane FellainiManchester United’s season of transition has been seen more of lows and less of highs. This is largely due to a tough starting fixtures list, dozens of injuries in the squad and an ineffective midfield. Ageing midfield is identified as the area that requires a major revamp. The January transfer window opened up with all the premier league teams looking to strengthen their squads in preparation of the second half of what has turned out to be a grueling and interesting season.

Manchester United boss David Moyes was heavily criticized for his failure to lure any big stars in the summer. The only signing he was able to pull off was Marouane Fellaini from Everton. This move has often been criticized as a panic buy and Manchester United had to pay over the odds for the Belgium international as the deal was completed on the last day of the summer transfer window. Although United finally got their man, he has been billed as a flop by the media and football pundits.

Fellaini has just made 8 appearances since his deadline day move to the premier league champions. It is a bit harsh to refer to a player of Fellaini’s caliber a flop considering Arsenal, Chelsea and many major European clubs were considering a move for him just a season back.

He started 31 games for the Merseyside club last season scoring 11 goals and making 5 assists in the 2012/2013 season. During this season he won 73% of his tackles and 60% of the headers. It has to be noted that he posted those statistics last season and he was often deployed in the No.10 role for Everton under David Moyes. The stats of the last season show that Fellaini can not only add some serious bite to the midfield but also create chances and score goals for the team.

Mata’s arrival has already brought optimism and confidence back to the premier league champions. With the lethal strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and RVP returning to action in addition to the dynamic duo of Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj supplying passes from the midfield, United could well clinch the all-important champions league spot. Such a turn in form and fortune would definitely take the pressure off the Belgium international and allow him to get back to his best again. The injury to Michael Carrick could well be the opportunity for the Belgium international to prove his detractors wrong and make the midfield place his own.

Marouane Fellaini at his best could make one of the most intimidating midfielders in the premier league. This would be a win-win situation for Manchester United as it would prove David Moyes’s first signing is not a flop. Additionally, they could finally have an answer to Yaya Toures and Matics of the league.
