Yevhen KonoplyankaYevhen Konoplyanka’s name hit the papers once more this week as he scored the winning goal against a lacklustre Tottenham team in a disappointing Europa League outing.

The game was more notable for the shocking miss that Spurs’ new Spanish striker, Roberto Soldado, produced as he blazed over from about five yards out.

But Konoplyanka impressed in patches with his quick feet and ingenuity going forward. He also showed some steel when dispatching his penalty. There’s clearly something about the lad and it’s easy enough to see why Liverpool were interested in him last January.

Of course, the game and his goal have given the English press an opportunity to re-hash these links. Take The Metro, who claim that the Reds ‘are continuing their interest’, in the £16m rated winger.

They also suggest that Brendan Rodgers sent a team of elite scouts to watch the wing wizard in action against Spurs and that they were impressed by what they saw. If this is true, it’s not unreasonable to expect Liverpool to move back in for the player when the transfer window re-opens.

And I have to say, I think this would be a smart move. Whilst Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez provide a plenty of bang for their buck, Liverpool’s wingmen aren’t exactly setting their world ablaze.

With Victor Moses heading back to Stamford Bridge at the end of the summer, bringing in somebody who could produce the goods on a more regular basis is now a necessary step. Adding more threat to the Reds’ midfield could be key to Liverpool challenging for the title next season.

£16m is a decent sum of money, but Konoplyanka has proven himself at club level and at international level. I’d say that he’s ready for a step up in quality.

Whether he’d be a natural fit for the Premier League remains to be seen. But given his quality on the ball and his confidence, he’s got to be worth a go. Let’s hope that Brendan Rodgers hasn’t given up the chase just yet.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool go back in for Konoplyanka in the summer?

No!! Ibe is not, total nonsense. Konoplyanka is a wonderful proven international who will be world class in the Epl and CL. Ibe is years away.

Would do really well in this Liverpool team. Strength in depth in all positions are what we’re lacking right now and Yevhen would be the start of us addressing that.

Looks a good player but not worth 16 mill. If we go back in for him we should not offer more than 10 mill for him (imo). He’s not proven in big league so to me 16 mill is a big risk to take on him. Brendan rodgers should’vr give young jordon ibe alot more game time this year, think this young man is the real deal and will be better than raheem sterling (imo). Good luck out on loan jordon. YNWA

Only seen him on a couple of occasions, made Walker look like a mug when he played against England, also looked better than Yarmolenko in that game too. If we do get champs league footie next year, we’ll need more than our threadbare squad.
