Mathieu ValbuenaIt’s easy to laugh away these claims, given the fact that the Reds have just put five goals past an opponent who used to be known for having a defence that’s hard to break down. But isn’t Luis Suarez covering up a lot of the club’s weaknesses in the creativity department?

Liverpool’s top drawer strike-force (made up of the Uruguayan and Daniel Sturridge) could feed on scraps and they’d still be likely to slam home a few goals. Both footballers are extremely gifted individuals, capable of carrying the team on their day.

But I can’t help but wonder what they could achieve if they had a better midfield playing behind them. With Steven Gerrard getting on in years, he’s becoming less and less effective (though he had a good game against Stoke). Jordan Henderson has improved inordinately, but still has some way to go. Then there’s Philippe Coutinho, who has impressed, but remains rather raw.

Wouldn’t the Reds be more effective if they had a more experienced creative midfielder running the show?

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are keeping tabs on Marseille playmaker, Mathieu Valbuena. The talented 29-year-old Frenchman has already talked about his desire to embrace a new challenge. Check out these quotes:

“A departure? To discover something else next season could be interesting. My goal is to make a great second half of the season in the club and make a great World Cup. It’s been eight years since I am here at l’OM. I’ve never hidden that an experience abroad tempts me. We’ll see…”

The man’s clearly grown weary of his Ligue 1 experience. If Brendan Rodgers comes knocking, I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity.

If you’ve seen Valbuena in action, you know what he’s capable of. He’s lightning quick, has great dribbling ability and isn’t afraid to take people on. He’s also a tidy footballer, who rarely gives the ball away and has a knack for finding gaps in between defenders.

He’s one of the best footballers in Ligue 1 and would be a real asset for the Reds. I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at this signing.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool swoop in for this tiny Frenchman?

If the player is very good that is what is important and not his height.

Currently we need stable CENTRAL DEFENDERS who would not spent their time holding a striker but monitoring the situation in tthe ground. We have let in very silly goals like the game we had against STOCK CITY.
