Fabio CoentraoIt’s believed that Madrid were willing to sell to United, but only if they could bring in a replacement before the transfer window slammed shut. They weren’t able to accomplish this feat and thus the deal didn’t go ahead. Manchester United were left hanging.

It was yet another example of David Moyes failing to set the transfer market ablaze. Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping that he’s on better form this January.

As it happens, the failure to sign Coentrao hasn’t been too crippling for Manchester United. Yes, the club as a whole hasn’t had a good season, but United’s current left-back, Patrice Evra, has done a pretty good job. He may be 32-years-old, but he’s still got pace to burn and a fearsome cross.

He was particularly effective against Swansea City at the weekend.

According to The Mirror, United are still interested in Coentrao and could attempt to wrap up a deal this January, or in the summer. But, as usual, things aren’t going well for David Moyes.

Whilst I’ve just sung the praises of Patrice Evra, I can understand why Moyes is weighing up his options in this department. The French left-back is just about to enter the autumn of his career and will need to be replaced at some stage over the next couple of years.

Coentrao is 25-years-old and is thus a younger, fitter and more durable option. He shares Evra’s crossing ability, but he’s also got some flair to his game, isn’t afraid to take defenders on and can be a real thorn in opponent’s side. Whilst his career has stalled since his move to the Bernabeu, it’s clear he’s still a very talented individual.

But does that justify Real Madrid slapping a rumoured £20m price-tag on him? Absolutely not.

Coentrao has played just four games this season and is clearly surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu. It would be cruel for his paymasters to hold him to ransom in this way. He’s clearly not worth £20m to them anymore.

The Mirror suggest that United would be willing to part with £14m for his services. This seems like a more reasonable price.

It’s now up to David Moyes to assert himself and stand firm. Coentrao’s a good player, but United need to make sure they get a fair price for him. Fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should United be chasing Fabio Coentrao? Is the Real Madrid left-back worth £20m?
