Sebastian GiovincoWhilst Arsenal fans won’t have enjoyed the final 15 minutes of their clash with Aston Villa, I’m sure they’ll have been overjoyed to have seen Olivier Giroud return from injury.

The Frenchman has been absent for a couple of weeks now and I think it’s fair to say that Arsenal have struggled as a result. Just think of how the Gunners struggled to break down Newcastle.

It was little surprise that Giroud scored on his return, picking up a difficult pass from Jack Wilshere with a sublime touch, taking a second, slightly luckier touch and emphatically slamming the ball home. He looked like a well rested man and is now surely ready to exert his influence for the rest of the season.

Of course, Arsenal fans will still live in fear of the consequences that any further injuries problems will have. I can’t help but feel that it would be foolish for Arsene Wenger not to sign a striker during the transfer window. It would be like purchasing an insurance plan for Olivier Giroud. It would dramatically improve the odds of the Gunners winning the title this season.

As it happens, The Star have linked Arsenal to Juventus striker/attacking midfielder, Sebastian Giovinco. This could be a very smart transfer indeed.

Arsene Wenger loves versatile players and Giovinco certainly fits this billing. When Giroud is fit, the Italian can slot into the Gunners midfield. When he needs a rest, he can take the Frenchman’s place. That could work pretty nicely.

Claudio Pasqualin, the player’s agent, has already confirmed Arsenal’s interest. Check out these quotes: “We have had contact with Arsenal.  It was a request for information about his situation. There was nothing more [at the moment].”

Whilst the Gunners haven’t registered an official bid, it’s clear that there’s some interest here. With injuries to Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner still ailing the squad, a player like Giovinco could be just the ticket.

Last season he found the back of the net 11 times and the season before that, when he was on loan with Parma, he scored 16 times. This is a fairly healthy return for a player who alternates between the midfield and a striking role.

At 26-years-old, he’s about to enter the best years of his career. If he were to do so with Arsenal, I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal make a move for this talented Italian?
