Hakan CalhanogluEven if Liverpool couldn’t quite eek out a result against Manchester City, I was glad to see Philippe Coutinho get on the scoresheet. The Reds midfield has often been singled out as the club’s weak link this season.

With Luis Suarez leading the line upfront and Liverpool boasting plenty of defensive options, the only part of the squad that really needs more work is the midfield.

With Steven Gerrard getting on in years and influencing the game less and less, this must be a real concern for Brendan Rodgers. As such, it’s somewhat lucky that Philippe Coutinho has stepped up this season. The little Brazilian is clearly the real deal, with his slick passing, direct running and smart footballing brain. Without his presence, I’m sure that Luis Suarez wouldn’t have been so successful this year.

Jordan Henderson also deserves respect for the way that he’s upped his game this season. He’s finally starting to repay the faith that Liverpool showed when they first signed him.

But Liverpool need more. If they’re to blossom into a side that’s truly capable of competing for the Premier League table, they’ll need to sign somebody who can add a little more threat to this area of the pitch. I certainly hope that this is at the top of Brendan Rodger’s list of priorities during the January transfer window.

According to The Star, Liverpool are on the trail of Hamburg’s gifted midfielder, Hakan Calhanoglu. The player’s father has helped to fuel speculation with the following quote:

“We are in advanced talks with an English club playing in the Champions League, the club in mention wants to complete the deal as soon as possible, let’s see what happens.”

Galatasaray are also thought to be interested, so if Liverpool are to get their man, they’ll have to act quickly.

The attacking midfielder has been very impressive this season, scoring five times and assisting twice in sixteen games. That’s a pretty hand return for a young player. His dynamic performances have caught the eye and it seems to only be a matter of time before a big club swoops in for him.

Here’s hoping that it’s Liverpool who does so. With both Hakan Calhanoglu and Philippe Coutinho in tow, the club’s future could well be secure.

What’s your take? Should the Reds put in a January bid for this Turkish talent?
