Xabi AlonsoNow that we’re smack-bang in the middle of the January transfer window, Manchester United fans will have their fingers crossed that David Moyes goes after a creative midfielder.

After all, that’s the player that this squad has been missing for some time now. Players like Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and Tom Cleverley are there to keep possession. They don’t really have it in them to break down defences, pick out killer passes and win games.

Still, under Sir Alex Ferguson’s watch, they were able to produce the goods. But now that the great man has moved on, it looks like somebody is going to have to be brought in.

Wouldn’t it be something if The Red Devils ended up signing Xabi Alonso? The Spaniard’s Real Madrid contract is set to expire at the end of the season, which will mean that he’s available on a free transfer. Indeed, according to The Star, Real Madrid are ’90 per cent sure that Xabi Alonso will leave’. I like those odds!

Given United’s pressing need, wouldn’t that make him the perfect addition to the squad? We all know his quality. He’s a quicker thinker, has a great range of passes and isn’t afraid to try the spectacular (think back to his lofted long-range efforts). I’d certainly like to see him back in the Premier League.

Whilst he’s no spring chicken, the 32-year-old must still have two-or-three good years left in him. It’s not like he has ever relied on pace during his career. He wins games through his technical ability and defense splitting passes, rather than by putting the after burners on.

His arrival would allow the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini more freedom to roam further up the pitch. In fact, he could provide proper balance for this Manchester United squad. I’m sure he’d ask for a pretty big wage, but given what he can offer, he may just be worth it.

Signing Xabi Alonso would also give Manchester United an opportunity to put one over on their great rivals, Liverpool. Given that the Reds are currently above David Moyes’ side in the Premier League table, I’ll take victories wherever I can.

Let’s see if David Moyes has what it takes to persuade Xabi to move to Old Trafford.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move in for this ex-Liverpool star?
