Alexandre PatoEveryone seems to agree that Arsenal need to sign a striker during the January transfer window. The only question is who they should choose to bring in.

There’s no doubt that Arsenal have performed better than expected thus far this year. The fact that the Gunners have been touted as potential title challengers demonstrates their growth over the last 12 months. Whilst they’re currently muddling through the hardest series of games of their season, there’s still every chance that they could walk away with some silverware this year.

But all this could be in jeopardy if their main man, Olivier Giroud picks up an injury. He is, after all, the Gunners’ only world-class striker. The other options: Nicklas Bendtner, Chuks Aneke and Yaya Sanogo are either too raw and inexperienced or just outright bad. That a club with ambitions as big as Arsenal could be in this position is somewhat startling.

So let’s hope that Arsene Wenger is already drawing up a list of potential targets.

With that in mind, it’s my hope that he adds Corinthian’s Alexandre Pato to the very top of the list. I can’t help but feel that he’d be the perfect foil to Giroud. What’s more, he has the ability to fire Arsenal onwards and upwards.

Oh and let’s not forget that signing Pato would present Arsenal with another opportunity to get one over on their North London rivals, Tottenham. Check out these quotes from Pato himself:

“Tottenham had called Corinthians to ask for my transfer. I sat at the table with the club and my agent and I decided I wanted to stay.” (Source: The Star)

He may have turned down Tottenham, but I can’t help but wonder if he’d be more tempted by Arsenal. The Gunners have more European football pedigree, are renowned for their free-flowing football and have one of the best midfields in the world at the moment. If Arsene Wenger’s side is still at the top of the Premier League table come January, Pato could well be interested.

The man himself made a name for himself in Serie A, where he found the back of the net regularly and was able to display his technical ability. He hasn’t been playing his football in Brazil for too long, but I’d say it’s already time for him to return to a top League.

If he happens to do so with Arsenal, then that’s all the better.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal battle it out with Tottenham to sign Alexandre Pato?
