Should Liverpool consider letting him go after just three months?

Iago AspasBrendan Rodgers made a number of good signings this summer. It seems that Iago Aspas wasn’t one of them.

The Spanish striker has yet to find the back of the net in a Liverpool shirt.

Given the circumstances, it’s a little unfair to place the blame squarely on Aspas’ shoulders. But Rodgers and co. will certainly have hoped to have received more return on their £7m investment.

Unfortunately, Aspas’ start to his Liverpool career has been rather stop-start. In recent weeks he’s been sidelined due to a torn thigh muscle that he picked up during training.

The rest of the time, he has struggled to work his way up the pecking order. This shouldn’t be all that surprising. He is playing behind Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge after all.

Both Suarez and Sturridge have been in sensational form this year and both of them seem to be finding the back of the net with ease. Luis Suarez is one of the best strikers in world football, whilst Sturridge is in the form of his life. Aspas is unlikely to be given too many opportunities over the course of this season.

Still when he has been handed an opportunity, he hasn’t looked bad. He’s made six appearances for Liverpool and was certainly able to demonstrate his tenacity, commitment and drive.

That’s why it’s a little disappointing to hear The Star suggest that he’s already weighing up his options after just three months at the club. That’s a fairly quick turnaround.

It’s suggested that the 26-year-old has turned the heads of La Liga side Valencia. They are said to be willing to snap up Aspas on a temporary or permanent basis.

The truth is, Aspas doesn’t strike me as a natural goal-scorer. Last season (which just so happened to be his first season in a top League) he scored 12 goals in 33 appearances. Sure, Celta Vigo were fighting a relegation battle, but Aspas wasn’t exactly slamming home the goals.

Rodgers would have known this when he signed him. The fact that he’s played six games and hasn’t scored yet won’t have him breaking a sweat. He’s still a decent third choice striker and as long as Suarez and Sturridge are scoring, Liverpool are well stocked in this department.

So if a club swoops in to sign him, I hope that they are sent on their merry way.

What’s your take? Will Iago Aspas be given the opportunity to impress at Liverpool?

I think Liverpool can and should do better!

It took Dennis Bergkamp about 6 months to really settle into life at Arsenal. I think Aspas is a pile of horse turd but lets give him the year.

Aspas is wasted at Liverpool. He is not good enough to start for LFC, and without European football will get little meaningful playing time. At his age, he should be a club where he plays regularly.

He should be sold, and replaced by one or two young and coming strikers. Someone like Berahino or Guidetti, or both. Then there is also Borini, who may or may not come back with improved confidence from his loan spell.

Aspas should be given enough time,it will be very unfair to send back him to spain.
