Christian BentekeAfter starting the season in fine form, things have begun to wind down for Christian Benteke. Whilst it’s not quite time for Aston Villa fans to start panicking, there are reasons for concern.

He’s the man that Paul Lambert relies on to supply his side with a regular source of goals. But he’s also much more than that. He’s the focal point of the Villa attack. He’s the guy who holds up the ball whilst Villa midfielders fly forward. He’s also the man who makes Villa so threatening at each and every set-piece.

So yes, the goals may not be flooding in, but given his all round game, he’s always going to be an important player for the Midlands outfit. As such, he’s always going to maintain a hefty price-tag.

This brings me to the news that a number of different clubs are moving in with a view to a potential January transfer. The Star claims that Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are all ready to test Lambert’s resolve when the transfer window re-opens.

That’s right, the fact that Benteke signed a new four-year deal during the summer has not put off the Premier League elite.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham are in desperate need of a striker. Given that Manchester United already have Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney leading the line, I’m sure David Moyes won’t be willing to spend big on another striker.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have Olivier Giroud, a player who bears some similarities to Christian Benteke. Both are physically tough, hard-working, out-and-out goalscorers. If Arsene Wenger signs another striker this January (and he should), then I’m sure he’ll go after somebody with a bit of pace and technique.

Tottenham, on the other hand, could use Christian Benteke. For one reason or another, Roberto Soldado has been unable to make a meaningful mark in the Premier League.

It’s time to turn to somebody who has a proven track record on English soil. It just makes sense to go after somebody who scored 23 goals in their first season in the Premier League.

Of course he’d be a good fit. The only question is as to whether Andre Villas-Boas and co. have enough cash to snap him up. There’s no word as to how much Paul Lambert will want for his dynamic centre-forward.

One thing’s for sure. If Spurs are serious, they’ll have to go in big.

What’s your take? Would Christian Benteke be a better fit for Tottenham or Arsenal? Can Spurs afford him?
