Could this sensational freebie signing be the solution to Manchester United’s problems?

Andrea PirloManchester United have been on the hunt for a creative midfielder for the last two seasons. I think it’s fair to say that their prospecting has been thoroughly unsuccessful.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought in Shinji Kagawa, in the hope that he’d bring his Bundesliga goal-scoring form to the Premier League. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. Shinji has struggled to make his mark on English soil and David Moyes doesn’t seem to trust him at all. In recent games he’s been thrust out wide and it looks like that’s where he’ll remain for the rest of the season.

David Moyes has also attempted to bring somebody in. We saw Moyes go after two top creative midfielders during the summer and fail to close any deals. Just imagine the effect that Cesc Fabregas would have had on this Manchester United squad. The same’s true of Thiago Alcantara. The addition of either player during the summer would surely have allowed the Red Devils to avoid the slow start that has plagued their season.

Instead, David Moyes opted to bring in Marouane Fellaini, a good holding midfielder, but not the creative talent that United need. In other words, there’s still a lot of work to be done in this department. The club simply can’t afford to allow this issue to persist any longer.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Andrea Pirlo will be leaving Juventus this summer.

The 34-year-old bearded wonder is among the best passers in world football. He’s the kind of player who could come in and do a job for United for a couple of years, whilst David Moyes seeks out a long-term solution.

Take a look at the following quotes from the Juventus midfielder:

“My future? There is the rest of the season to talk about it. We’ll see. I am optimistic. I want to keep playing because I’m good and enjoy it. I don’t know if it will be at Juventus or another team.”

At the very least these quotes prove that he’s willing to move on. It’s my hope that he finally gets a chance to prove himself in the Premier League. It’s thought that Arsenal, Chelsea and yes, United, are all sniffing around.

But whilst Arsenal and Chelsea have crowded midfields, United have a desperate need. Pirlo will be available as a free transfer next summer, so the Red Devils only need to put together a compelling wage packet.

This is beginning to look like a no brainer for David Moyes. Let’s hope he has what it takes to drag this deal over the line.

What’s your take? Could we finally be about to see Andrea Pirlo in the Premier League?
