Alexis-SanchezEngland’s disaster show against Chile on Friday will have done much to raise the profile of Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez. The wing-wizard has come on leaps and bounds this season at the Camp Nou, with his two goals against England capping off a fine year.

The Three Lions just couldn’t seem to keep up with his movement. Witness the way he out-maneuvered Leighton Baines to grab the first goal. Baines is now slouch, but he was made to look like a bit of a chump. The same’s true of Gary Cahill, who slipped up in stoppage time to allow Sanchez to grab his second of the night.

Last season Sanchez scored 11 goals and grabbed 13 assists in 46 games. This year, he’s only played 15 times, but already has 7 goals and 4 assists. At 24-years-old, it’s clear he’s still improving. The fact that he’s starting to produce end product on a regular basis (and that he’s doing it at a top club) is a good sign.

He wasn’t bad last season, not by any means, but there were those who were uncertain as to whether he’d make it at the Nou Camp. He’s certainly proved his doubters wrong.

Naturally, Manchester United have picked this moment to dive in. According to The Star, ‘Moyes will check out the pacey Chilean and keep tabs on him before making a bid in the new year’. I’m sure this news with have United fans very excited indeed.

After all, it’s not like Antonio Valencia, Shinji Kagawa or Ashley Young are producing meaningful results. Valencia has been okay this season, but certainly not as his best. Kagawa has yet to earn the manager’s trust (and isn’t really a winger), whilst Young is less than useless. Ryan Giggs is now too old to be relied upon and Wilfried Zaha is too young.

Given the options, it’s fair to say that Sanchez would improve this United team. But given his recent form, he’s not going to come cheap either. Barcelona won’t be willing to sell unless David Moyes is prepared to splash the cash.

The Red Devils need to announce their intent this season by making a big signing. Sanchez could be that man.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be chasing Alexis Sanchez, or should they be on the hunt for a creative midfielder?
