Could this £2.5m signing actually set Arsenal back?

Salomon KalouArsenal signing Mesut Ozil has elevated the club onto a brand new footballing and financial landscape. The £42.4m German seems to have entirely invigorated the North London club, transforming them into title challengers and pumping belief back into the fans.

Arsenal look a lot more effective this season. With Ozil pulling the strings, alongside the likes of Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky, Arsenal’s attacking is more fluid and difficult to stop. Olivier Giroud must be really enjoying himself at the moment.

But the Ozil deal didn’t just improve things for Arsenal on the football pitch. It’s also positioned the Gunners as a club who can attract the very best players in world football. By now it’s clear that Arsene Wenger still provides some real draw for even the best players.

Suffice to say, Ozil’s move to Arsenal has generated an awful lot of momentum. It’s now up to Wenger to ensure he doesn’t fumble the ball and let it all go to waste.

The best way to do this (beyond continuing to win games) is to keep playing it smart in the transfer market. The Gunners have just signing one of the best midfielders in the world. The can’t follow it up by signing a no-chancer.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal have been offered a chance to sign Salomon Kalou during the January transfer window. I’m sure this news won’t exactly have fans jumping for joy.

The former Chelsea star is currently playing his football with French side Lille, with a £2.5m release clause written into his contract. So yes, he wouldn’t break the bank, but this doesn’t mean he would be a good addition to Arsenal’s squad.

Kalou was never more than ‘okay’ whilst at the Blues. He never proved that he was worthy of a role at a top club. If he did, then cash rich Chelsea would have fought harder to keep him.

Arsenal need a world-class striker to come in and back Olivier Giroud up. I’m afraid that Salomon Kalou isn’t that man, regardless of his meagre price-tag. If the Gunners are to continue their title-charge, they’ll need to make a rather bigger financial commitment.

Let’s hope that Arsene Wenger is able to surprise us once more.

What’s your take? Would signing Salomon Kalou be a step backwards for Arsenal?

I agree with you but that’s the problem Wenger will have who can he buy for the right price? And who is available with experience to come in and to the job straight away with premier league experience under their belt? Jan was always going to be tricky to get someone anyway so it will be interesting to see who’s available.
