Sergi RobertoSince joining Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers has shown an admirable willingness to promote, or purchase young players. It’s been one of the defining characteristics of his short Anfield reign. I can’t help but feel that it’s a key reason why the Reds are performing so well this year.

The youngsters learned from their mistakes last year and are playing even better as a result. This, combined with the fact that Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez are both in fantastic form, has launched Liverpool up the Premier League table.

But here’s hoping that Brendan doesn’t rest on his laurels. In a perfect world, he’d take to the January transfer window and bring in a couple of extra players to help round out his squad. Yes, money could be an issue, but this is the first chance the Reds have had at winning the Premier League in some time. Investing further could be a smart move.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Liverpool are ready to offer Barcelona £17m to sign their midfield starlet, Sergi Roberto. They’ll also face competition from Tottenham (who really don’t need any more midfielders, but there you go).

Roberto has been a part of Barca’s youth programme since 2006. He made his first team debut in 2010 (and has made six appearances in total). I think it’s fair to say that he’s struggling to earn first team football. But that’s no slight on him. Barca’s midfield is just inordinately good.

There’s a reason why he would cost Liverpool £17m. He’s a very talented individual. He’s got great feet, bags of tricks and excellent technical ability. He’s the kind of player who always seems to have time on the ball and he has the ability and craft to carve out a perfect pass and split defenses.

Given that Liverpool’s midfield is struggling to provide service for their strikers, I’d say a signing of this nature would be a step in the right direction.

Sergi Roberto is not yet a world beater, but with the right amount of attention at the right club, he could become one. Let’s see if Brendan Rodgers gives youth a shot once more.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool sign Sergi Roberto or go after more experienced individuals?
