Alexandre PatoIf Arsenal can reach the January transfer window and still be on top of the Premier League, there’s a good chance that they’ll go on to win the bloody thing. It may seem difficult to believe, given their club’s poor fortune in recent years, but this is their best shot in a long time.

If Arsenal do make it to the next transfer window, they’ll not only have momentum behind them, they’ll also have an opportunity to make some smart additions to their squad.

Arsene Wenger proved during the summer that he’s willing to spend money on top players. That’s how Arsenal were able to bring in Mesut Ozil, a player Real Madrid rated highly and who cost £42.4m.

Whilst the Gunners don’t really need to break the bank this January, they really ought to invest in a top quality striker. They need somebody to pick up the slack when Olivier Giroud isn’t finding the back of the net.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that both Arsenal and Tottenham are duking it out to sign Alexandre Pato.

Pato stayed with AC Milan for six years before moving back to Brazil to play for Corinthians. He’s been at the club for less than a year, but it seems there’s already a chance he could move on.

Check out these quotes from Corinthians director, Roberto de Andrade:

“Given his value, I think it is difficult for him to move to another Brazilian club. If the two clubs [Arsenal and Tottenham] are interested in Pato we do not exclude to sell him during the winter transfer market.”

It looks like he’s available. What’s more, I’m sure a top striker like Pato would prefer to move to The Emirates, rather than White Hart Lane. That’s not intended as a knock at Spurs, it’s just clear that Arsenal are in the ascendance at the moment.

Not only would it be another chance for Arsenal to get one over on the old rivals, it would be an opportunity for the Gunners to add a world-class centre-forward to their squad. That sounds like a win-win to me.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners be chasing Alexandre Pato? Can they convince him to move to the Premier League?

Spurs do have two of his Brazilian team mate’s in their side. This might influence his decision?
