Sami KhediraI have to say, up until now I’ve struggled to understand why Manchester United would pursue Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira.

Didn’t they just sign Marouane Fellaini, another holding midfielder during the summer? Shouldn’t they be looking for a creative midfielder, rather than somebody to handle more of the defensive duties?

Those are the questions that have plagued me every time I’ve seen these rumours pop up. So why do I still get a little bit excited every time I hear that he’s been linked to Manchester United?

That’s probably because he’s one of the best holding midfielders in world football. The German International is an excellent defensive talent, who marks well, makes an inordinate number of interceptions and throws himself into tackles.

But he’s equally good at turning defense into attack. You don’t get 41 caps in the German international side without having a little flair to your game. Khedira’s technical ability is impressive, he’s a quick thinker and his passing is accurate.

He’s the kind of player that wouldn’t look out of place in this current Arsenal midfield. But since they already went ahead and signed Mesut Ozil, I’d say they’re covered on that front.

So it’s not that Khedira is your typical defensive midfielder. He’s more of an all-rounder. In terms of improving Manchester United’s first team, he’s a sure thing.

I can’t help but wonder if David Moyes is eyeing up Khedira as a means to unleash Marouane Fellaini.

Moyes knows Fellaini well from his Everton days. He’ll be well aware that the big Belgium can offer more than he currently does going forward. There’s certainly something to be said for having somebody as big and powerful as Fellaini further up the pitch.

Signing somebody who can handle his defensive duties, whilst helping Manchester United to dominate possession is a smart move.

The Mirror claim that Khedira could cost as much as £30m (they also suggest that Manchester City are interested. The Star claim that United have sent Phil Neville to watch the lad play in recent weeks.

That’s a lot of money to spend on another holding midfielder. In this case, however, it would be money well spent. I’m on side for this one.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United really be pursuing Sami Khedira?
