Should Arsenal sign the son of one of their great rivals?

Kasper SchmeichelBelieve it or not, one of the most prominent players in Arsenal’s current run of fantastic form, has been their goalkeeper. Since the David Seaman days, the Gunners have never exactly been renowned for their strength between the posts. It’s always been a seemingly insurmountable weakness. Until now.

Wojciech Szczesny finally seems to have wandered through the erroneous haze and made it out the other side. Last season was the most trying of his young career. The number of errors he committed, the number of shots he should have saved (but didn’t) and the number of rash decisions he made can’t be counted on my two hands.

And when Arsenal’s first fixture this season rolled by, a 3-1 rollicking at home to Aston Villa, it looked like his poor form was going to continue.

Fortunately for Arsenal fans everywhere, he’s turned things around. Now it’s up to him to remain consistent and help the Gunners mount a serious title charge.

Some may feel that the signing of Emiliano Viviano was what put Szczesny on his toes. The Polish stopper could knew that were he to slip up an experienced keeper would step in to take his place.

But this threat may have dwindled over the last couple of months. Viviano hasn’t played a game since arriving at the Emirates. For some reason, Wenger continues to stand by Lukasz Fabianski, a player who has never really offered Arsenal very much.

As such, I’d say there’s a real need for Arsenal to look at other keepers. They should bring in a top goalie who can provide genuine competition for the Gunners’ current number one.

This brings me to the news that Arsenal are considering signing Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel. Wouldn’t it be something if the Gunners signed Peter Schmeichel’s son? I’m sure that would create a few more divisions between Manchester United fans.

The Mirror claims that Hull City attempted to sign Schmeichel during the summer, but were turned down. But a few months on and his situation has changed. Schmeichel is set to leave Leicester City at the end of the season when his contract expires.

That means that the Foxes may look to cash in this January whilst there’s still the opportunity to do so.

So he wouldn’t break the bank, but he would create some serious competition between the sticks. And as we’ve seen before, it doesn’t hurt to get Szczesny all fired up.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal swoop in for this Championship sensation?
